Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc 2018

Father's rating 4.0 ★★★★☆ · Vivino 4.3

The white of a house that began as a Lazarist mission's vineyard, competed for years with Haut-Brion across the road, and came under the same owner in 1983. It took back its name from 'Laville' in 2009. A bottle that widened again a view narrowed by Burgundy. 4 stars.

Arbois in the Jura, first in line on France's first list of AOCs in 1936. A Trousseau from an organic and biodynamic domaine founded in 1953. On its own merely fairly good — then a grain dish turned it into a great wine. 4.5 stars.

Leroy began in 1868 as a négociant in Auxey-Duresses. A premier cru white from Saint-Aubin, the valley behind Montrachet, rested for more than twenty years. The level had dropped and I was worried, but everyone marvelled. 5 stars.

A Primitivo di Manduria named in honour of the only pope Puglia ever produced. The tannins don't intrude and it's soft; like Zinfandel, chocolate and a tobacco-like finish blend well. Not much fruit on the nose and not complex, but a bottle for when you want softness in the mouth. 4.
