In one paragraphCharles Dauteuil Blanc de Blancs Brut Grand Cru is a non-vintage Brut Champagne made from 100% Chardonnay grown in Champagne's Grand Cru villages. 'Charles Dauteuil' is not an independent winery but a brand. French company records show the trademark is owned by GCPR (Groupement de Champagnes de Propriétaires Récoltants), a beverage wholesaler founded in 1998 in Romery in the Marne Valley and run by Romain and Maryse Tribaut of the family grower Tribaut-Schloesser. It is distributed as a retail-chain label — Sainsbury's in the UK, Leclerc in France — and imported into Korea by Le Vin. Alcohol is 12.5%; dosage and lees ageing are not published. Vivino community average 3.9 (400 ratings), no critic scores. In Korea the importer's list price is ₩211,000 (about US$153, Wine21), but real prices range from ₩59,000 at an E-mart clearance (about US$43, June 2026) to ₩147,000 at a wine shop (about US$107, May 2026).

Market note: Charles Dauteuil is a retail-chain label, and each market gets a different cuvée: Sainsbury's in the UK (Vintage Brut), Leclerc in France (Grande Réserve), Le Vin in Korea (Brut, Premier Cru, and this Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs). Vivino lists the Brut (w/2357232), the Premier Cru (w/2414410) and this Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs separately; this bottle has the highest average of the three. The data is thin — 400 ratings and 110 reviews — and Vivino wrongly lists the grapes as 'Pinot Noir, Chardonnay'.

What this wine is

The label makes three promises. Blanc de blancs means Chardonnay only; Grand Cru means grapes only from Champagne's 17 Grand Cru villages; Brut means dry. The Chardonnay Grand Crus sit mostly on the Côte des Blancs — Chouilly, Cramant, Avize, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Which village this is, the label does not say, and I could not find out.

Who 'Charles Dauteuil' is turns out to be the more interesting question. There is no official website, and wine retailers repeat the same boilerplate about 'a family domaine with decades of tradition'. Follow the French trademark and company registries and the answer appears. The trademark belongs to GCPR — Groupement de Champagnes de Propriétaires Récoltants — a beverage wholesaler set up in 1998 in Romery, a small village in the Marne Valley, and its managers are Romain Tribaut and Maryse Tribaut. That is the Tribaut of Tribaut-Schloesser, a family that has made Champagne in Romery for four generations. Decanter, reviewing the same brand's Vintage Brut, described it as 'made for Sainsbury's by family grower Champagne Tribaut-Schloesser'. So Charles Dauteuil is a separate brand one grower family runs for retail chains: Sainsbury's in Britain, Leclerc in France and Le Vin in Korea each receive different cuvées. Whether the grapes for this Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs come from the Tribauts' own vineyards or are bought in, how long it spends on the lees and what the dosage is — none of that is published. The one thing I can confirm is 12.5% alcohol.

What the world says

No critic has ever scored this bottle. Not Wine Spectator, not Suckling, nobody listed on Vivino. Retail-chain labels do not reach the critics' tasting tables. What remains is the community.

Vivino: 400 ratings, average 3.9. 65% at 4 or above, 32% at 3, thirty people (8%) at 5. 110 reviews. Higher than the same brand's Brut and Premier Cru, but the number of ratings is 0.3% of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label's. Keywords: green apple, pear and baked apple (26 mentions), brioche and biscuit (15), citrus (12), and honey (7). Acidity 4.1/5, fizziness 4.2, intensity 3.6. The numbers are small enough that this is impression rather than statistics, but the direction is consistent: apple and pear, bread, honey. Exactly my note.

"Nice value if you can wait more than two hours. Starts with peach, apricot, lemon and bitter citrus zest, then turns into warm brioche, almond, nutty cream, biscuit. A Burgundy oak nuance. Lovely." — Vivino review, Nov 2023, 4 stars

"Very refreshing blanc de blancs. Biscuit and citrus offset by a hint of pear. Drank on the slopes of Vertus in Champagne in 35-degree heat. Vigorous small bubbles; the colour of the pale yellow hay at the side of the road." — Vivino review, Jul 2019, 4 stars

"Brioche, pear, citrus, baked apple and lemon." — Vivino review, Dec 2023, 4 stars

None of the reviews is in Korean, but the sentence structure of several English ones gives away Korean users. The label's distribution map shows through.

How I drank it

November 13, 2019, 4.5 stars. "Pear honey great."

Of all my three-word notes, this is the one I like best: two aromas and a verdict. It was the day I uploaded fifteen backlogged bottles at once, and most of them got 'Good' or 'Not bad', but for this one I wrote down what I actually smelled. Pear and honey. Six years later I open the Vivino keywords for 400 people and find pear 8, honey 7. Small proof that my nose in week three was not wrong.

The same day I gave Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label 4.5 as well, and looking back, that tie is the point of this article. On one side, the most famous yellow label in the world, scored by 150,000 people and made by LVMH; on the other, a retail brand no critic has ever scored and that has no website. But in the glass, the requirements for Grand Cru Chardonnay do not change: good grapes from a good village, enough ageing, a sensible dosage. Get those three right and you get pear and honey, whatever the label says. The me of 2019 gave no bonus for a famous name, and I am still proud of that.

One honest caveat, though. This bottle is hard to repeat. Few labels swing almost fourfold in Korea, from ₩59,000 to ₩211,000 (about US$43–153), and nobody knows which of those is the 'real' price. At ₩60,000 (about US$43) it is a fine deal for a Grand Cru blanc de blancs; at ₩140,000 (about US$101) the same money buys a Grand Cru from a producer with a name. If I drink it again it will be from somewhere like an E-mart clearance, near ₩60,000, with hoe (Korean sashimi) or oysters. And this time I will write more than three words. The bottle has earned it.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of Champagne is Charles Dauteuil Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru?

A non-vintage Brut Champagne made from 100% Chardonnay grown in Grand Cru villages. 12.5% alcohol, a fresh style of green apple, pear, brioche and honey. 'Charles Dauteuil' is not an independent winery but a retail-chain brand run by the Tribaut family (Tribaut-Schloesser) of Romery in the Marne Valley. No critic scores; Vivino community 3.9 (400 ratings).

How much does it cost?

The Korean importer's (Le Vin) list price is ₩211,000 (Wine21, about US$153), but real prices vary enormously: ₩59,000 at an E-mart clearance (June 2026, about US$43) and ₩147,000 at a wine shop (May 2026, about US$107). Overseas retail could not be confirmed. Around ₩60,000 is a good price for a Grand Cru blanc de blancs.

What food does it go with?

Vivino lists pork, shellfish, salmon and tuna, and mild soft cheese. Being 100% Chardonnay it is light and high in acidity, so it is especially good with hoe (Korean sashimi), oysters, sushi and fried food; one reviewer called it 'a good match with raw seafood'. Serve cold at around 8°C and give it 30 minutes in the glass for the brioche to come up.

Who actually makes it?

French company records show the 'Charles Dauteuil' trademark is owned by GCPR (Groupement de Champagnes de Propriétaires Récoltants, Romery), a beverage wholesaler founded in 1998 and managed by Romain and Maryse Tribaut — the family grower Tribaut-Schloesser of Romery. Decanter also recorded the same brand's Vintage Brut as 'made for Sainsbury's by Tribaut-Schloesser'. The source village, lees ageing and dosage of this Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs are not published.
