Market note: Fratelli Martini is one of Italy's largest sparkling producers, with several volume brands in the Santero class besides Canti. A shelf staple at big European supermarkets such as Waitrose in the UK and Albert Heijn in the Netherlands. Vintage averages have climbed steadily from 3.6 to 3.9, so recent releases keep getting better.
What this wine is
Prosecco is a sparkling wine made from the Glera grape in Veneto and Friuli, in Italy's northeast. Instead of a second fermentation in bottle as in Champagne, it ferments in large pressure tanks — the Charmat (Martinotti) method — which keeps it cheap and leaves the apple, pear and floral aromas intact rather than yeasty. That is why it became the best-selling sparkling wine in the world.
Canti is that Prosecco, made by a Piedmontese company. Fratelli Martini Secondo Luigi, headquartered in Cossano Belbo near Asti, is one of Italy's biggest producers of sparkling and everyday wine, and launched the Canti brand in the early 2000s to target younger drinkers and export markets. It buys grapes from the Prosecco DOC zone and bottles in its own cellars. Millesimato on the label means at least 85% of the grapes come from a single harvest; Extra Dry, despite the name, carries 12–17 g/L of residual sugar and is slightly sweeter than Brut (12 or less). Alcohol 11–11.5%, producer's recommended serving temperature 10–12°C.
The producer's note is brief: 'Dry and pleasantly fruity, pale straw colour, fine and persistent bubbles. As an aperitif, and throughout the meal.'
What the world says
There are no critic scores. Neither Parker nor Suckling reviews a ₩20,000 Prosecco. Instead, 1,452 Vivino users gave the 2018 vintage an average of 3.7, and the label as a whole sits at 3.7 across 11,904 ratings. The keywords are apple, green apple, pear and peach, then citrus, lemon and grapefruit, followed by cream and yeast (93 mentions) and mineral and honey (64). Structure: acidity 3.8/5, fizziness 3.9, intensity 2.1 — light, tart and lively, Prosecco by the book.
The vintage trend is interesting. From 2013 to 2017 it was stuck at 3.6, then crept up to 3.7 in 2018, 3.8 in 2019 and 3.9 in 2021. The 2018 I drank is where that climb begins.

How I drank it
13 November 2019, 4 stars. 'A spumante, lightly enjoyed.'
It was the same day I logged Almaviva (4.5), Tarapacá (3.5), Mouton Cadet (3) and Juan Gil Blue (3) one after another. Looking back, it amuses me that among all those big reds, this was the bottle that got 4 stars. I didn't write down a single aroma, just that I'd 'lightly enjoyed' it — and that is precisely what this wine is for. Nothing to analyse; it simply puts you in a good mood. Three weeks in, I was already scoring 'mood value' and 'wine value' separately.
A week earlier I'd given my first 5 stars to Dom Pérignon 2008, and set beside that, Canti is of course humble. But Dom Pérignon is ₩400,000 (about US$290) and Canti is ₩20,000 (about US$14). That's twenty bottles for the price of one. Even by my standards today this wine lands near 4 stars, for three reasons. First, it delivers Prosecco's apple and pear honestly. Second, the touch of sweetness in Extra Dry clicks surprisingly well with Korean delivery food — fried chicken, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), anything hot. Third, E-Mart always has it. When a house party or a holiday calls for 'something to pop', reach for this name and nobody will complain. If you're a Brut drinker the sweetness may bother you, in which case pick another line from the same house or a Brut Prosecco.
