At a glance
39 critic scores on Vivino, logged between 1994 and 2020, clustered in the 85–93 range (averaging around 90).
Market note: Brut Classic is Deutz's entry-level non-vintage cuvée, a different tier from its prestige bottlings such as Amour de Deutz (vintage) and Cuvée William Deutz.
What this wine is
In 1838, two German immigrants, William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann, settled in Aÿ, Champagne. They began as négociants with no vineyards of their own, buying finished wine, disgorging it and applying their own label — but they gradually built up their own holdings, convinced that great Champagne required a direct connection to the land. In 1882 the house became a founding member of the Syndicat des Grandes Marques, the club of Champagne's grand houses.
The darkest chapter in Deutz's history came in 1911. That year, growers across Champagne rose up in anger over the boundaries drawn for the appellation and the flood of fraudulent "Champagne" flooding the market — and in Aÿ, the mob burned the village and looted the cellars of several houses. Deutz's headquarters and stock were destroyed, and the house reportedly felt the effects of that loss for the next 50 years. World War I and then the Great Depression compounded the damage — annual sales fell from 600,000 bottles to just 80,000 by 1931 — and Marie Deutz poured her personal fortune into the house to keep it from bankruptcy. Fourth-generation Jean Lallier modernized the facilities starting in 1938, and fifth-generation André Lallier pushed into export markets like New Zealand and the US from 1972. Amid the broader Champagne crisis of the early 1990s, Louis Roederer (the Rouzaud family) came in as an investment partner in 1993, and the house still operates independently under the Roederer umbrella today.
The "Madonna's favourite" story is real, in a sense — but the cuvée she's said to favor is not this entry-level Brut Classic. It's Amour de Deutz, the house's prestige vintage cuvée. Two independent web sources repeat this claim, but neither Deutz nor Madonna herself has confirmed it publicly, so it's best taken as "reportedly," not fact.
What the world says
This Brut Classic has been rated by 36,044 people on Vivino, averaging 4.1 — roughly 200,000th among 12.35 million wines worldwide, about 53,000th among French wines. 39 critic scores are on file, dating from 1994 to 2020 and clustering in the 85–93 range (averaging around 90).
The flavor keywords lead with apple and pear (1,711 mentions), followed by citrus and lemon (1,317), and brioche and toast (1,298). Structure: acidity 4.1/5, fizziness 4.2, intensity 3.7 — the community's own structure data actually rates the fizz fairly high.
"Deutz is an all around incredible champagne with notes of green apple, citrus, brioche, minerals. Incredibly soft, mild, elegant with small bubbles." — Vivino review, Sept 2022, 4.2 stars
"Amazing and precise. Fine, persistent bubbles carry notes of green apple, lemon zest, brioche." — Vivino review, Aug 2025, 4.1 stars
A fizziness score of 4.2/5 in the community data is nowhere near low — which cuts against my own impression of flat bubbles that night.
How I drank it
6 February 2020, 3.0 stars. "Brioche, minerals. The evening started off so flat that I drank it with barely any interest. The bubbles felt almost nonexistent — is that normal? I'd heard Madonna loved this one and expected something much showier. I'll have to give it another chance next time." That same night I scored the Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2015 at 3.5 — this Deutz came out lower of the two.
Vivino's own structure data puts fizziness at 4.2/5, actually on the high side for the community — the exact opposite of what I felt that night. There could be several reasons: the glass shape (a wide glass loses bubbles faster than a flute), serving temperature, how long the bottle had been open, or simply an off night. There's no basis to call it a flaw in the wine itself — I'm just recording the impression I had at that table, that evening.
This site already carries notes on three other non-vintage Brut Champagnes: Louis Roederer Brut Premier (4.0), Delamotte Brut 'Le Mesnil-sur-Oger' (4.5), and Taittinger Brut Réserve (4.0). Deutz Brut Classic's 3.0 is the lowest of the four. Whether that's because the "Madonna's favourite" build-up set my expectations too high, or just an off night, the closing line of my note — "I'll give it another chance" — suggests I hadn't written the wine off entirely.

Is it really Madonna's favourite Champagne?
The cuvée reportedly favored by Madonna isn't this Brut Classic — it's Amour de Deutz, the house's prestige vintage cuvée. Two independent web sources repeat the claim, but it hasn't been confirmed by Deutz or Madonna herself, so it's best taken as "reportedly," not confirmed fact.
