What I learned today: sometimes it's not the first scent but the last sip that decides how a glass stays with you.
At the bus stop after work, I missed two buses in a row. One was so packed the doors didn't open; the other I missed staring at my phone. I stood in the cold wind for twenty minutes and got to the bar late. Master Seo had already turned on the sign for me.
He didn't ask anything, just slid a pale-gold glass toward me. Oak, vanilla, and a stony minerality. A firm, quiet nose. But after I swallowed, at the very end, butter stayed behind.
That finish opened the drawer. The dead of winter when I was twenty-one, the kitchen on that night the sun set early. A huge bottle I'd never seen stood on the table. Even wrapped in cloth, it was longer than my forearm. Father filled the glasses with one hand on its neck and the other under its base, and after his last sip he hummed a little, which he rarely did. I don't know the bottle's name.
The notebook says "Double magnum," and then this: "Last butter flavor made my day." What turned Father's day around, at the very end, was one sip of butter.
The two missed buses felt a little less unfair. What I learned today: sometimes it's not the first scent but the last sip that decides how a glass stays with you.
What this wine is
The estate was founded in 1811, but for most of its history it was farmed by tenant sharecroppers who sold off the must rather than making wine themselves. When Laurent and Hélène Martelet took it over in 1998, conditions were dire — by one local account, they inherited "just ruins and no electricity." The couple rebuilt the infrastructure from the ground up, constructing a proper cuverie where before there had only been pressing facilities, and the family now represents the sixth generation to farm these vines. The estate works 9.5 hectares around its buildings in Blagny, a hamlet on higher ground just west of the village of Puligny-Montrachet. (A separate claim circulates that the family has held land here since the 15th century — but the verifiable record only supports an 1811 founding and a fresh start in 1998, and that earlier claim is corrected here rather than repeated as fact.)
2016 was an especially brutal year for Burgundy's growers. A frost on April 26-27 was the worst since 1985, and unlike past frost years it struck higher-elevation vineyards particularly hard. Puligny-Montrachet's grand crus were hit so badly that six major domaines had to pool their meager Montrachet harvests into just two barrels. Across the Côte de Beaune, from Meursault to Beaune, yields were slashed — and this Hameau de Blagny 2016 is a bottle that survived that difficult year.

This 2016 vintage has been rated by 150 people on Vivino, averaging 4.4 — slightly above the 4.3 average across all 900 ratings for the label. One critic score is on file, (90-92), normalized to 92 (Dec 2017), and wine.com separately cites a 92 from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, noting a wine "fresh on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, tightly wound."
The flavor keywords lead with butter, oak and vanilla (89 mentions), followed by lemon and citrus (57) and minerals and stone (56). Structure: intensity 3.6/5, acidity 3.3, sweetness 1.4 — a profile where oak makes an unusually strong showing for a Puligny-Montrachet.

The recommended drinking window is 2018-2026, and I opened this bottle in January 2020, near the start of it.
How I drank it
16 January 2020, 4.5 stars. "Pretty pale gold color. Double magnum. Oak, vanilla and mineral, stone. Last butter flavor made my day." Short, but that closing line stands out — the decisive detail that "made my day" was a butter note at the finish.
That same day I logged a string of double-magnum Burgundies in a row: Louis Roederer Brut Premier (4) to start, then this Hameau de Blagny (4.5), Arnaud Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin (4), and finally Vieux Château Gaubert Graves Rouge 1999 (2.5). Of the four, this white scored highest. Double magnums are generally understood to age more slowly, keeping aromas more concentrated, and that lines up with both my note's tight "oak, vanilla, mineral, stone" description and the Vivino structure data's intensity of 3.6. My 4.5, essentially matching the community average of 4.4, also fits the sense that this wasn't just a solid bottle — it was the best pour of the day.
