In one paragraphDomaine Coche-Dury Meursault 2013 is a village-level white from Chardonnay grown in several parcels around Meursault in Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. The domaine began in the 1920s when Léon Coche sold grapes to négociants; Jean-François Coche, who ran it from 1973, married into the Dury family, giving it its present name, and his son Raphaël has made the wine since 2010. It farms about 9 hectares, rarely uses more than 25% new oak, and bottles after two winters in barrel. On Vivino the 2013 averages 4.6 from 435 ratings; Wine-Searcher's aggregate of four critic reviews is 91. Its world average of US$1,084 / 750ml (ex-tax, Sep 2026) is extraordinary for a village wine. I called it 'my best white of 2020' and gave it 5 stars.

mineralscitrusoakA memory from December, at twenty-two

In the scent column: 'toasted sesame, then stone.' What I learned today: toastiness can come from the barrel, not just the pan.

Saturday. The moment I opened the door, a toasty smell greeted me first. Master Seo was roasting hazelnuts on a small burner behind the counter — snacks for the first customers, he said. Then he poured a white into a glass, set it in front of me and said: smell the pan first, then the glass. If something is in both, tell me.

From the pan, roasted nuts. From the glass, lemon, white peach, wet stone, and in front of them a thin nuttiness. Lighter than the pan, more finely ground. The smell that first rises when you toast sesame seeds. Before I could say it aloud, a Tuesday night in December opened.

Twenty-two, the first Tuesday of December. That night Dad poured from several cloth-wrapped bottles in turn. There was a red, and something with bubbles. The last bottle was white. At the first sniff I asked who was toasting sesame. Dad laughed. After a while the nuttiness lifted, and cold, pointed stony smells came out one after another. But in the mouth that pointedness turned round, unbelievably. It lingered so long after I swallowed that I put the tangerine I had been about to peel back on the table. When I looked up, Dad had put down his fork too. Neither of us ate any more that night. I don't know the name of the bottle.

The notebook has four lines for that date, and the last is the longest. 'My best white of the year.' As 'the curtain of toasted-sesame aroma lifts', sharp minerals unfold, he wrote. On the palate, a complete reversal. And after the finish, he couldn't eat anything. Five stars. The bottle was Coche-Dury Meursault 2013. I stuck on the wine-name Post-it. Probably Dad put down his fork that night for the same reason I put down my tangerine.

When I told Master Seo the name, the hand shaking the pan paused for a moment. Then he said just one thing. In his two years in Burgundy, he only ever got as far as that house's door.

After closing, I wrote the bottle's name on page thirty-nine of the new notebook. In the scent column: 'toasted sesame, then stone.' What I learned today: toastiness can come from the barrel, not just the pan.

What this wine is

Coche-Dury didn't start out selling bottles. In the 1920s Léon Coche gathered parcels of vines in Meursault but sold most of his grapes to négociants (Wikipedia). In 1964 his son Georges took on his inherited share and expanded the holdings, and in 1973 Georges's son Jean-François took charge. When Jean-François married into the Dury family, the two surnames joined to form today's name.

Under Jean-François this small domaine became the benchmark for white Burgundy. The critic Clive Coates called it one of the finest white-wine domaines in the world; Robert Parker counted him among the five or six best white-wine makers in Burgundy. His son Raphaël helped in the cellar from the age of fifteen (Inside Burgundy), joined full-time in 1999 and took over the winemaking when his father retired in 2010.

About 9 hectares, some 3,500 cases a year. The grapes are firmly crushed before pressing, then fermented and aged in oak barrels; new wood rarely exceeds 25% except for the top wines. In July the barrels are blended, then returned to wood for a second winter before bottling the following April. The village Meursault comes from several unnamed village parcels.

What the world says

The four critic reviews on Wine-Searcher aggregate to 91. Among them, Jancis Robinson opened this bottle in 2018 and wrote that it had density but was still far too young and closed.

Vivino's drinkers see it differently. The 2013 averages 4.6 from 435 ratings, with 175 fives and 230 fours. The label as a whole also averages 4.6 from 5,891. Suggested drinking window: 2015–2025.

"Very precise, straight, flinty. Opens beautifully and gives layers of lemon, citrus, lemongrass, almonds." — Vivino review, Jan 2018, 5 stars

Structure shows intensity 3.8, acidity 3.4 and sweetness 1.7. Minerals (105 mentions), citrus and lemon mix almost evenly with butter (90) and oak, followed by hazelnut, nuts, brioche and toast. Many reviews also mention flint and smoke — reductive notes.

The world average is US$1,084 / 750ml (Wine-Searcher, ex-tax, Sep 2026). A wine from unnamed village parcels sells at this price because the name on the bottle is the house itself.

How I drank it

December 1, 2020, 5 stars. I logged four bottles that day: Maison Leroy's Monthélie Rouge (2 stars), Arboleda Carmenère (4), Bollinger Special Cuvée (4), and this one (5).

My first sentence was 'my best white of 2020.' When the curtain of toasted-sesame aroma lifts, the sharp minerals of white Burgundy come out one after another. But on the palate it reverses completely, wrapping the tongue and the whole mouth and calling up every soft sensation. The finish went beyond lingering aroma or a hint of sweetness — it lasted so long I couldn't eat anything afterwards. By far the best Meursault.

The community's 4.6 and my 5 are close. The critics' aggregate of 91, and the 2018 verdict of 'still closed', are further away. I opened mine two years after that. Whether the closed door had opened in the meantime, or my glass was simply lucky that night, I can't say. All I recorded was the fact that I couldn't eat anything afterwards.

Haru — Page thirty-nine of the new notebook. 'Toasted sesame, then stone.' Toastiness can come from the barrel, not just the pan.
