In one paragraphDugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2005 is a village-level red made from old Pinot Noir vines in Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. The first Domaine Dugat came with the marriage of Fernand Dugat and Jeanne Bolnot in 1923; the family sold its wine to Maison Leroy until it began bottling its own in the 1970s. Bernard Dugat married Jocelyn Py in 1979, and in 1994 the domaine became Dugat-Py (Burgundy Report). The wines age in eleventh-century cellars once attached to the Abbey of Saint-Bénigne. On Vivino the 2005 averages 4.3 from 132 ratings; Wine-Searcher's aggregate of six critic reviews is 90, with a world average of US$197 / 750ml (ex-tax, Sep 2026). It fell short of my hopes, and I gave it 4 stars.

earthyoakmushroomA memory from January, at twenty-two

What I learned today: expectation gets written into the day's record too.

Friday, the busiest night. When I came in, a red glass sat at the end of the counter, covered with a small saucer. Master Seo said he'd poured it an hour ago. Lift the saucer, he said.

When I lifted it the scent poured out all at once. Wet earth, mushrooms frying, leather, and between them cherry and strawberry. No waiting needed; everything was already at the door. I swirled the glass for a long while, but nothing came after. A scent that was all out front, with nothing more behind. That lack opened the hour on the night of the second day of the new year when the red bottles began.

Twenty-two, the second day of the new year, after the two whites were finished. This bottle alone Dad had stood in a corner of the veranda since morning. He'd wiped the glasses twice. When he opened the cloth-wrapped bottle and poured, the smell of frying mushrooms rose over the table at once. I said it was all out already. Dad swirled his glass for a long time. Smelled once, swirled again, smelled again. Then he gave a small smile and set the glass down. 'No more coming, however long I wait,' he said. I don't know the name of the bottle.

Of the eight lines for that date, three were reds. The first red opened got three and a half stars: the standard taste of that village. This one got four. Maybe he'd expected too much, he wrote; he'd hoped for more potential, more performance. But it was already wide open, and though a good wine for a village-level bottle, it left something to be desired. The bottle was Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2005. I stuck on the wine-name Post-it. Probably 'already wide open' in the notebook was written after he saw my glass empty while he was still swirling his.

Minjae read the words on the bottle's neck aloud and startled himself. Master Seo summed it up in a line, as usual.

After closing, with my coat on, I wrote the bottle's name on page forty-five of the new notebook. In the scent column: 'mushroom, earth, everything at the door.' With that, I've read all eight lines for the second day of the new year. What I learned today: expectation gets written into the day's record too.

What this wine is

Dugat-Py's wines age in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, beneath the old Aumônerie, the almonry once attached to the Abbey of Saint-Bénigne in Dijon; Burgundy Report describes the cellars as eleventh-century work, partly Byzantine and partly Gothic.

Loïc Dugat-Py, who runs the house today, is the thirteenth generation tied to vines in the village. The first 'Domaine Dugat' came from the marriage of Fernand Dugat and Jeanne Bolnot in 1923. Bernard Dugat made his first vintage in 1975, and only in the 1970s did the family begin bottling under its own name; before that, Maison Leroy bought the wine. In 1979 Bernard married Jocelyn Py, and in 1994 the domaine added his wife's surname. Son Loïc joined in 1996; organic trials began in 1999, and by 2003 the whole domaine was farmed organically.

Fermentation is whole-cluster, and the barrels all come from a single cooper, François Frères. 'Vieilles Vignes' means old vines; the notes on the 2016 vintage give their age as 30–50 years (Burgundy Report). I couldn't confirm the vine age for the 2005.

Haru — Twenty-two, the night of the second day of the new year, as the reds began. Dad swirled his glass a long time, then gave a small smile. 'No more coming, however long I wait.'

Minjae — 'Old vines?!' Minjae freezes. Master Seo, one line: 'Old vines bear little. That's why it's deep.'

What the world says

The six critic reviews on Wine-Searcher aggregate to 90. Vivino lists a 91 (2007) without naming the publication.

On Vivino the 2005 averages 4.3 from 132 ratings: 26 fives, 94 fours, 11 threes and one one. The label as a whole averages 4.2 from over 3,000, and the 2009–2020 vintages range from 4.1 to 4.4. The suggested drinking window is 2010–2025, so when I drank it in 2021 it was in the back half.

"Drinking so well, smooth, earthy, mushroom, vanilla with elegance and panier of cherry, raspberry, strawberry and majestic finish." — Vivino review, May 2024, 4.5 stars

Structure shows acidity 4.1, intensity 3.3, tannin 2.8 and sweetness 1.8. Earth (44 mentions), minerals, mushroom (26) and leather lead the keywords, with cherry (46), strawberry and raspberry close behind. Oak, tobacco, blueberry, black cherry and licorice also appear.

The world average is US$197 / 750ml (Wine-Searcher, ex-tax, Sep 2026).

How I drank it

January 2, 2021, 4 stars. Of the eight bottles that day, three were red: Bouchard's Vosne-Romanée 2017 at 3.5, this one at 4, and last, Michel Noëllat's Les Suchots 2014 at 4.

Did I expect too much from the words 'Dugat-Py 05'? I wrote that I'd hoped for more potential and performance. But the bottle was already wide open. A good wine for village level, I ended, but it left something to be desired. The scents I noted — earth, oak, mushroom, leather, red fruit — almost match the community's top keywords.

The community averages 4.3; I gave 4. A small gap, but it has a direction. Opened in the back half of its window, the bottle had already given everything, and I was waiting for what came next. The 4 was less the bottle's score than the distance between my expectation and the bottle.
