cherrystrawberryearthyA memory from January, at twenty-two

In the scent column: 'clove, the third time, gathered this time.' What I learned today: a scent recognises a vineyard before a person does.

Wednesday. Before handing me the glass, Master Seo gave me the assignment. Today I wasn't to name the scent, only to count how many times I'd met it.

Cherry, strawberry, and under them wet earth and leather. And in the middle something warm and sharp, packed tight. The dentist's smell. The red glass on page thirty-six was one; the red glass on page forty was two. I was about to say three, then stopped. This one didn't scatter; it had gathered into a single point. It was stronger than the other two. That dense point opened the latest hour of the night of the second day of the new year.

Twenty-two, the second day of the new year, the kitchen close to midnight. The dishes were done and Mom had gone to bed first. Rings from many glasses overlapped on the table. Dad opened the last bottle of the day still wrapped in cloth and poured me a little red. The moment I smelled it I said: the dentist's smell again. Instead of answering, Dad turned the notebook back. He turned a long way, stopped at a page, and touched that page and the day's page in turn with his finger. He didn't show me. Raspberry lingered at the end of the scent for a long time. I don't know the name of the bottle.

Of the eight lines for that date, the last was this bottle. 'Every wine from Les Suchots is delicious.' The concentrated clove the vineyard is known for, red fruit, good balance. And that he'd go and study the Noëllat family too. Four stars. The bottle was Michel Noëllat Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots 2014. I opened page thirty-six again: Lucien Le Moine Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Les Suchots. A different house, the same vineyard. I stuck on the wine-name Post-it. Probably the page Dad found that night, turning back, was the line where I first said 'dentist's smell' that autumn.

When I answered three, Master Seo said neither right nor wrong. He added just one line.

After closing, I wrote the bottle's name on page forty-three of the new notebook and folded down the corner of page thirty-six. In the scent column: 'clove, the third time, gathered this time.' What I learned today: a scent recognises a vineyard before a person does.

Haru — Wednesday. 'Not the name today — just count how many times you've met this scent.'

What this wine is

The name Noëllat turns up more than once in Vosne-Romanée. Domaine Michel Noëllat carries the name of Michel Noëllat, who died in 1989. His sons Alain and Jean-Marc are the fifth generation; Alain's daughter Sophie and Jean-Marc's son Sébastien the sixth. Sophie handles sales, and Sébastien has been in the vines and cellar since 2008. The family are cousins of the Noëllat-Barthods of Chambolle-Musigny (Burgundy Report, 2013).

They work about 27 hectares, with 23 appellations in the cellar. Les Suchots, the premier cru behind this bottle, comes from two separate plots totalling 1.5 hectares. The grapes are fully destemmed and fermented for 18–20 days, then aged 14–16 months in oak; even the grands crus see only 50–60% new wood, from four different coopers at medium toast. A new cuverie was completed in 2009.

This site first covered Les Suchots through Lucien Le Moine's 2015. Different house, different year, yet the same scent is written in both records.

What the world says

Wine-Searcher lists no critic aggregate for the 2014, in contrast to the same house's Les Beaux Monts and Échezeaux at 92. Vivino shows no critic score either.

On Vivino the 2014 averages 4.3 from 82 ratings: 16 fives, 60 fours, 5 threes and one two — heavily bunched at four. The label as a whole averages 4.3 from some 1,300 ratings, and the 2011–2022 vintages range from 4.0 to 4.4. The suggested drinking window is 2018–2028.

"Deep ruby color. On the nose are red fruit, fresh raspberry, white pepper and cherry and vanilla notes. Well balanced, good structure and length." — Vivino review, Jan 2023, 4 stars

Structure shows acidity 4.0, intensity 3.1, tannin 2.7 and sweetness 1.7. Red fruit — cherry (21 mentions), strawberry, raspberry — leads the keywords, followed by earth, leather and charcoal, oak, vanilla and clove, and pepper and cinnamon. The producer describes a nose moving between ripe red fruit, flowers and spice.

The world average is US$189 / 750ml (Wine-Searcher, ex-tax, Sep 2026).

How I drank it

January 2, 2021, 4 stars. I logged eight bottles that day, and this was the last of the night: Arnaud Ente Bourgogne Chardonnay (4.5), Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin (4), Egly-Ouriet Blanc de Noirs (5), Leflaive Mâcon-Verzé (3.5), Bouchard Vosne-Romanée (3.5), Domaines Ott rosé (4), Gancia Pinot di Pinot (2), and this one.

'Every wine from Les Suchots is delicious,' I wrote. Three months earlier, in October 2020, I'd drunk Lucien Le Moine's Les Suchots 2015 at 4.5 and written down clove. Here too 'the concentrated clove the vineyard is known for' came first, red fruit followed, and the balance was good. I was calling a scent I'd met twice 'characteristic'. The last line was a promise to go and study the Noëllat family as well.

The community averages 4.3; I gave 4. Nearly the same. I'd given the Le Moine from the same vineyard 4.5, so same vineyard, different house and year, half a star apart. With no critic score on this bottle, the only comparison I had was my glass and the one before it.

Frequently asked questions

A Pinot Noir from Les Suchots, a premier cru in Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy. Domaine Michel Noëllat owns two plots there totalling 1.5 hectares. The 2014 averages 4.3 on Vivino (82 ratings).

How much does it cost?

Wine-Searcher's world average is US$189 per 750ml (ex-tax, Sep 2026). Overseas retail runs from US$178.44 in Hong Kong (duty paid) to US$248.12 in the UK (tax incl.).

What food goes with it?

The Vivino community suggests beef, veal, poultry and game such as venison.

Do wines from Les Suchots really smell of clove?

Clove appears among the oak-related keywords for this 2014 on Vivino, and I also noted clove in Lucien Le Moine's 2015 from the same vineyard. I found nothing that establishes it as a trait of the whole vineyard; it's what the two bottles had in common for me.
