What this wine is
Châteauneuf-du-Pape means 'the pope's new castle.' During the so-called Avignon Papacy that began in 1309, when Pope Clement V moved the papal seat from Rome to Avignon, his successor Pope John XXII built a summer residence nearby and planted vineyards around it. The ruins of that residence still give the village its name. On 15 May 1936, regulations led by Baron Pierre Le Roy (of Château Fortia) — setting minimum alcohol levels, yield limits and permitted grape varieties — became the prototype for France's entire AOC system, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape remains one of the first AOCs designated that day.
In the northwest sector of that appellation, the Charvin family has farmed vines for six generations since 1851. But for most of that time, the family simply sold its grapes to négociants rather than bottling wine under its own name — a tradition broken in 1990 when Laurent Charvin took over the domaine. He built a vineyard relying almost entirely on Grenache (an approach similar to Château Rayas), with small amounts of Syrah and Mourvèdre, then settled on 100% whole-cluster fermentation and maceration, ageing in concrete tanks with no new oak, and bottling unfiltered. He sells off about half of each year's production and keeps only the top lots for his own label — a strict selection process that's earned comparisons to Jacques Reynaud of Château Rayas.
What the world says
This 2015 vintage has 529 Vivino ratings averaging 4.2 (6,944 across all vintages, averaging 4.1). Two critic scores are listed: 93 and (93–95). The flavor keywords lead with the earthy group — leather, ashy, smoke — at 328 mentions, followed by red fruit like cherry and raspberry (289) and spice like pepper and licorice (245). Structure: intensity 4.6/5, quite concentrated, with acidity at 3.1 and tannin at 3.0 — a full-bodied profile that reads soft thanks to the low acidity.
Among the 25 vintages Vivino has on record, 2015 ranks near the top (behind only 1999 at 4.5 and 2019 at 4.3). Compared with the Deutz Classic Brut (3 stars) that Daniel opened the same evening, 6 February 2020, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape was the higher-rated wine of the two.
How I drank it
6 February 2020, 3.5 stars. The note is a single line: "Cherry, leather, raspberries — good value CDP." Rather than stretch it into an interpretation, here are the facts: that same evening Daniel also logged a Deutz Classic Brut, which got a 3 — with the comment that the gathering "started out flat, so I drank it without much excitement." By comparison, this Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape was the standout of the evening.
His short verdict, 'good value CDP,' sits 0.7 points below the Vivino community average of 4.2. But the two keywords he picked out — cherry and leather — both rank near the top of Vivino's flavor data (cherry at 93 mentions, leather at 124), so even in a one-line note, he landed on exactly the right notes.

What kind of wine is Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape?
A red from Domaine Charvin, a family estate in the northwest sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône, built on Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre. The family has farmed here for six generations since 1851, but only began estate-bottling in 1990 under Laurent Charvin. Vivino: 529 ratings averaging 4.2.
How much does it cost?
The Wine-Searcher world average price is still being confirmed (US$58 per 750ml ex-tax (Wine-Searcher, Sept 2026)). Korean retail pricing isn't covered on this site.
What food pairs well with it?
Vivino users suggest lamb, pork and poultry. With intensity at 4.6/5, this rich full-bodied red pairs especially well with fatty grilled dishes like lamb chops.
What's the connection between the name Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the AOC system?
The name comes from the summer residence — 'the pope's new castle' — Pope John XXII built after the papacy relocated to Avignon in 1309. On 15 May 1936, regulations for the region led by Baron Pierre Le Roy became the prototype for France's AOC system, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape is counted among the first AOCs designated that day.
