What I learned today: even what's left behind finds its way back in time, if someone waits for it.
When I opened the bar, an unfamiliar black umbrella stood in the umbrella stand. Someone had left it last night after the rain stopped. Master Seo stood it beside the counter and said, "They'll come for it." Around nine, sure enough, a guest opened the door, took just the umbrella, nodded, and left.
After that Master Seo poured me a white. Apricot first, then star fruit, pineapple, almond. And at the end, something salty, like clams.
That saltiness opened the drawer. Early winter when I was twenty-one, a rainy Thursday night, the kitchen lit only by the table lamp. The night Father swirled his glass and told me to look at the gold; this was the glass after that. This time he held it out without a word. I said, "It smells like the sea," and the rain went on outside. I don't know the bottle's name.
The notebook recorded a rule about Viognier: "Viognier has a characteristic that you have to eat in 2 to 3 years." And on the very next line, he wrote that this bottle, well past that rule, wasn't bad. Father wrote down the rule, and still drank the bottle that broke it to the last.
What I learned today: even what's left behind finds its way back in time, if someone waits for it.
What this wine is
Condrieu is a small AOC on steep granite and mica-schist slopes on the west bank of the Rhône in the northern Rhône valley. Only Viognier is allowed, plantings are narrow, and total production is small. Domaine André Perret is counted among the region's leading producers. André Perret's name became known once he took over the Clos Chanson plot in 1986, and the estate also works Coteau de Chéry, one of Condrieu's most respected sites. This 2014 is 14% alcohol, 100% Viognier.
The Vivino community's flavor keywords are dominated by stone fruit — apricot, peach, pear — at 216 mentions, followed by an earth-and-mineral group of honey, stone and ginger (122), citrus (53) and an oak group of vanilla and butter (51). My own note — "apricot aroma, star fruit, clam (a mineral, briny note), pineapple, almond" — lines up almost exactly with that distribution.
What the world says
This 2014 vintage carries 62 Vivino ratings averaging 4.1, with none at 3 or below and 82% at 4 or 5. Across the whole label it's 1,331 ratings at 4.1. A critic listed on Vivino gave it 93 (Dec 2015). Vivino's suggested drinking window for this vintage is 2016–2024 — meaning a bottle opened at five years, in late 2019, was in the middle of the window, not past it.
Viognier's low acidity is the usual reason people say to drink it within two or three years, and my own note repeats that line. But the reviews on this label push back on it. A 2018 WSET tasting note calls the wine "developing," and a 2024 review of the label still finds "dried apricot and grass notes" holding up. At André Perret's level, Condrieu looks like one of the exceptions to the drink-it-young rule.

How I drank it
December 12, 2019, 3.5 stars. "Apricot aroma, star fruit, clam, mineral, pineapple, almond. Viognier has a characteristic that you have to eat in 2 to 3 years. But 2014 (5~6 years later) is not bad."

The note is a small contradiction with itself: I wrote down the rule that Viognier should be drunk young, then opened a bottle five to six years old and called it "not bad" anyway. Lined up against Vivino's suggested window for this vintage (2016–2024), the bottle was actually still inside the window, just later than the conventional wisdom would allow. My 3.5 sits 0.6 below the Vivino community's 4.1, but it doesn't contradict the note's own conclusion.
