What I learned today: while the eyes rest, the nose travels farther.

Friday, eight-forty, in the middle of a downpour, every light in the bar went out at once. The music stopped too. Two tables of guests said "Oh?" at the same moment, and Master Seo, in no hurry, took candles from under the counter. With five candles lit, the bar shrank to the size of a kitchen.

"Until the power's back." He poured a white into a small glass for me. In the dark, my nose went to work first. Pear, apple, lemon peel. Light and sweetish. Rain beat against the window.

In the dark, the scent came looking for its date. Early winter when I was twenty-one, a rainy Thursday night. A kitchen lit by one lamp over the table. After the golden glass and the glass that smelled of the sea, it was the last glass of the night. Father took a sip of the sweet one and tilted his head to himself. It was the face of someone remembering a different glass. I don't know the bottle's name.

There's an unfamiliar name in the notebook: "It's not riesling's kungfu girl, but it's not bad for this moscato." Who is Kung Fu Girl? Turning back, I found the name on a line from a cold rainy night a month earlier. Drinking this glass, Father had stood that month-old glass next to it. That's how the pages of the notebook are stitched front to back.

Twenty minutes later the lights came back. The guests applauded, and I blew out the last candle. What I learned today: while the eyes rest, the nose travels farther.
