In one paragraphManfredi Moscato d'Asti 2017 is a Moscato d'Asti DOCG from Piedmont, Italy — a gently sparkling sweet white at 5.5% alcohol, made from Moscato Bianco (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains). Cantine Manfredi is based in Farigliano in the Langhe and began with Giuseppe 'Pin' Manfredi, who bought vineyards and sold wine by horse-drawn cart through the valleys of Cuneo and Liguria. On Vivino this vintage averages 4.1 from 58 ratings and the label as a whole 3.9 from 2,150; there are no critic scores. Wine-Searcher's world average price is US$5 per 750ml (ex-tax, last compiled Oct 2018), and overseas retail runs about US$8–11. Peach, apple, pear and honey lead the aromas. I noted how, held in the mouth, it moved from honey to high-acid fruit to flowers, and gave it a 4.

honeypeachlemonA memory from April, at twenty-one

What I learned today: sweetness is only beautiful when sourness wipes it clean at the end.

Wednesday. Early in the evening, with few customers, Master Seo poured a pale golden wine into a small tulip glass. Fine bubbles clung to the side of the glass. Today's task: hold it in your mouth and count to ten. Swallowing comes after.

One, two, three. Cold and sweet. At four and five my mouth warmed and honey passed through. At six and seven a lemony, grapefruity sourness scraped along the side of my tongue. Eight, nine. Last of all, white flowers. At ten I swallowed and my mouth was left clean. From that clean finish a spring night opened.

Twenty-one, spring, a Monday night as the cherry blossoms were beginning to fall. Dad came back late from a barbecue with friends, a small cooler bag in his hand. Before even taking off his shoes he called me to the balcony. From the bag he took a cloth-wrapped bottle, half full and still cold. When he opened the window, petals were drifting down into the alley under the street lamp. He poured a little into two glasses and told me to hold a sip without swallowing and wait. I stood with my cheeks puffed out, looking only out of the window. I don't know the name of the bottle.

I opened the notebook to that date. It says that after barbecue and big wines, they changed seats and settings and moved on to dessert. Hold a sip for a while, and as it warms in the mouth honey passes, then high-acid fruits at the finish, rounding off with flowers. Perfect for clearing the palate. The last line: "Watching it with the setting sun, this wine is so beautiful." Four stars. The bottle was Manfredi Moscato d'Asti. I stuck on the wine-name Post-it. Dad saw the blossoms against the sunset, and a few hours later I saw the same blossoms under a street lamp. Maybe Dad broke off a glass's worth of that evening and carried it home.

Master Seo said Moscato d'Asti has about the alcohol of beer. The bubbles don't push hard like Champagne; they just cling quietly to the glass. This house, he said, began with a grandfather who loaded wine onto a horse-drawn cart and sold it round the valleys of Cuneo and Liguria.

After closing, I wrote the name on the fifteenth page of the new notebook. I split the aroma box into ten cells and filled one for each number. What I learned today: sweetness is only beautiful when sourness wipes it clean at the end.

What this wine is

Cantine Manfredi is in Farigliano, in Piedmont's Langhe. It began with one man. Giuseppe, known as 'Pin', bought vineyards and farmhouses in the Langhe hills and sold wine from a horse-drawn cart through the valleys of Cuneo and Liguria. The retailer Winedering dates this to the 1930s; the importer page (Mr Wheeler) puts it after the Second World War, when he began making Dolcetto. The sources disagree, so I couldn't confirm the year.

In the 1980s his sons expanded the business, selling across Europe and to Japan, Canada, the US and China, and kept buying good Langhe vineyards. The family still runs it. On Wine-Searcher, names such as Patrizi and Umberto Fiore sit under the same company.

Moscato d'Asti is made from Moscato Bianco in the Asti hills. Fermentation is stopped early to keep the grape's sweetness, so alcohol is low, around 5.5%, and the fizz is a gentle frizzante, softer than Champagne. The producer describes a bright straw colour, a fresh fruity nose and classic Moscato fragrance, and says it stays fresh for over a year — by that measure, this 2017 was drunk about two years after bottling.

Minjae — Minjae counts to ten too and goes wide-eyed at the sourness at the end, while Master Seo polishes an empty glass and pretends not to notice.

What the world says

There are no critic scores. Wine-Searcher's US$5 world average was last compiled in October 2018, and today the wine sells in places like Greece, Denmark and the Netherlands for US$8–11 (tax incl.). Think of it as a neighbourhood-shop dessert wine in Europe.

How I drank it

April 13, 2020, 4 stars. I wrote down honey, peach, lemon, grapefruit and blossom.

It came after barbecue and big reds. We changed seats and settings, moved on to dessert, and opened this bottle. I held a sip of the well-chilled Moscato d'Asti and waited. As it warmed in my mouth, honey passed, then high-acid fruits at the finish, rounding off with flowers. Perfect for clearing the palate.

The cherry blossoms were past their peak and starting to fall. Drinking it while watching them with the setting sun, the wine was beautiful. That line is the whole of the day's note. My 4 is almost exactly Vivino's 4.1 for this vintage. More than the score, the record of this bottle is the order of things while I held it and waited, and the light that evening.

Haru — After closing, page fifteen of the new notebook, its aroma box split into ten. Haru looks up smiling as Master Seo clears away the empty tulip glass.
