What this wine is
Before going independent, Elvio Cogno spent years in a productive partnership with Marcarini, the respected Barolo house in La Morra. Then in 1990 he bought an 18th-century farmhouse atop the Bricco Ravera hill near Novello and founded an estate under his own name. Ravera is considered the finest cru among the eleven communes that produce Barolo. For nearly two decades afterward, Cogno devoted himself to preserving the winemaking traditions passed down from his father and grandfather. Over time he handed leadership to his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore, who has worked alongside him for 25 years, and the two continue running the estate on a shared principle: elegant wines that respect the traditions, styles and flavors of the Langhe.
Cascina Nuova occupies a different position from the storied Ravera cru. It's made from 100% Nebbiolo off the Cascina Nuova vineyard — 380m elevation, 3 hectares — which the estate itself describes as an "assemblage of grapes from the youngest vineyards": not old vines like Ravera, but fruit gathered from relatively young plantings. The winery presents it as an entry point, for those "keen to have a more immediate understanding of Barolo" before moving on to more complex examples. It ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel with automatic pump-overs and a 30-day maceration, then ages 24 months (including 60 days of lees contact) in large Slovenian oak barrels, followed by six more months in bottle before release. Annual production runs to about 20,000 bottles.
"Even young vineyards can produce an excellent Barolo" is the sentence that sums up this wine's reason for being. If the Ravera cru bottling shows the peak of what the Cogno estate can do, Cascina Nuova stands at the door, helping people understand the Barolo style itself before they walk through.

This 2013 vintage has 747 Vivino ratings averaging 4.1 — slightly above the wine's overall average of 4.0 across 5,531 ratings. Two critic scores are listed: 92 (Dec 2017) and 93 (Aug 2017); wine.com separately lists five publications — James Suckling 97, Robert Parker 93, Wine Enthusiast 93, Wine & Spirits 92 and Wine Spectator 92 (checked Sept 2026) — the deepest bench of critic coverage among the Barolo-tier wines this magazine has covered.
The flavor keywords lead with an earth group — leather, earthy, tar (313 mentions) — followed by red fruit: cherry, raspberry, strawberry (302). Structure: acidity 4.6/5, among the highest of any wine covered in this magazine, with tannin at a substantial 4.3 as well — the classic Nebbiolo profile of high acid meeting high tannin.

How I drank it
15 March 2020, 4.0 stars. "Red fruit, strawberry, raspberry... A genuinely easy-to-drink, delicious Barolo~~ The berry aroma that filled the room the moment I opened it was so fragrant and put me in a good mood." A short but clear note — calling a Barolo "easy to drink" is unusual, and that's exactly the point: it's precisely what Cascina Nuova is designed to be, an entry-level Barolo.
Vivino's structure data shows this is not, on paper, an easygoing wine — acidity 4.6/5 and tannin 4.3 are both formidable. And yet my note reads "easy to drink." That gap seems to confirm the exact effect Cogno's own description of Cascina Nuova claims: a Barolo built to be "more immediately understood." The Ravera cru bottling likely wouldn't have come across this approachable. The phrase "filled the room with berry aroma" is also notable — Vivino's own data ranks this wine's top aroma group as earth and leather (313 mentions), with red fruit second (302). What struck me first and hardest wasn't necessarily what the wider community noticed first.
That same day I also logged Marqués de Riscal Reserva 2014 (2.0 stars — covered elsewhere on this site). Tasted side by side, Cascina Nuova clearly left the stronger impression. I gave it 4.0, almost exactly matching the community average of 4.1 — a score with no real gap, which reads as a sign this wine did exactly what an "entry-level" Barolo is supposed to do.
