What I learned today: two rows that look the same, counted all the way to the end, can be one stitch apart.
Wednesday, before opening, I knitted at the counter. A scarf for Master Seo. I couldn't forget him rubbing his hands by the stove on the day the cold snap came. After every row I count the stitches. The left and the right have to match or the scarf goes crooked. I kept losing count.
Master Seo set a glass of red in front of me. Blackberry, plum, chocolate, vanilla. And in the gaps, something very green. The smell of a freshly cut bell pepper caught on the tip of my nose. Right then Master Seo gave me a quiz, and I missed the answer because I was counting stitches.
Even green pepper has a date. Smells, once I've smelled them, I don't forget. Early December when I was twenty-one, a Thursday night with sleet sticking to the window and melting. After all four cloth-wrapped bottles had gone around, two nearly identical glasses were left side by side on the table. The same two glasses I had called "the same" earlier. Before clearing them I smelled each once more. At the end of one glass there was a green pepper smell. I didn't say anything. Father was looking at the sleet outside. I don't know the bottle's name.
I opened the notebook. "Good balanced." Three and a half stars. One word away from the line right next to it. That one got "vanilla"; this one got nothing. Into that empty space I put my green pepper from that night. The bottle was Montes Limited Selection Cabernet Sauvignon-Carmenère. I stuck a wine-name Post-it into the notebook. Maybe Father knew the two glasses were a little different. Maybe he just didn't want to erase his daughter's "the same."
After closing I counted the scarf stitches from the start. The right side had one extra. What I learned today: two rows that look the same, counted all the way to the end, can be one stitch apart.

Four bottles that day: Napa by N.A.P.A. Michael's Red 2015 (4), Stag's Leap ARTEMIS 2016 (4.5), this wine (3.5), and Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 (3.5) — all four covered together in this magazine. Both Montes bottles got exactly the same 3.5.
My 3.5 is 0.3 below the community's 3.8; it's not directly comparable to Natalie MacLean's 87, but the two point the same way — my "balanced" note echoes her "plushy." I scored it half a point above the Montes Alpha Merlot (my score 3, community 3.8) — within the Limited Selection tier, this Carmenère blend got the more generous score from me. No re-tasting is on record.
