What this wine is
The Serranía de Ronda sits right next to Málaga on the Mediterranean, but its 700–1,100m elevation gives it an unusually cool, continental climate for Andalusia. The Roman ruins of the town of Acinipo show vines grew here long ago, but phylloxera devastated the region's vineyards in the late 19th century, and its wine tradition was largely forgotten for nearly a century afterward.
Two people put the region back on the map in the 1980s and '90s: Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe, a German-descended noble also known as a developer of Marbella, and German-born winemaker Frederic Schatz. Each independently planted modern vineyards and built wineries near Ronda, reigniting the long-dormant 'Serranía de Ronda' wine tradition. Larger and smaller bodegas followed in their wake, and the Sierras de Málaga designation of origin was the eventual result.
Ramos-Paul is a small family bodega within that revival, set between the Grazalema and Ronda mountain ranges near the Roman ruins of Acinipo. It grows Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, hand-harvesting into 19kg crates and ageing in French oak. Its stated philosophy leans toward minimal intervention: 'the earth makes the wine, and people shouldn't interfere.'
What the world says
This 2006 vintage has 900 Vivino ratings averaging 4.4 (1,265 across all vintages, averaging 4.3) — one of the highest community averages of any wine covered in this magazine. No critic scores are on record. The flavor keywords lead with oak, tobacco and vanilla (83 mentions), followed by black fruit like blackberry and plum (41) and red fruit like cherry and raspberry (31), with smoky, leathery earth notes (27). Structure: intensity 4.1/5, acidity 3.1, tannin 3.0 — a full-bodied profile with tannins rounded out by age, typical of a well-aged red.
The recommended drinking window is 2008–2018, and this 2006 vintage actually rates higher than the only other vintage Vivino has on record, 2005 (4.2, 232 ratings). Daniel's note about being 'ranked #1 red from Spain in Korea' appears to be his own reading of the Vivino Korea leaderboard at the time, and this site hasn't been able to reconfirm it independently — though a 4.4 average across 900 ratings goes a long way toward explaining that impression.
How I drank it
25 January 2020, 4 stars. "Deep red purple. Clean cork condition, Blackcurrant, cassis, rose, vanilla aroma like you get from Cabernet Sauvignon. Velvety smooth full body like Shiraz or Tempranillo..." the note begins, continuing: "...tobacco, pepper, soy sauce, long finish — very smooth despite the Merlot blend, the power of 15 years of ageing." Daniel wrote '15 years of ageing' here, but drinking a 2006 vintage in January 2020 actually puts it at 13 full years, or close to 14 counting from bottling — most likely a rounded-up estimate written in the moment, which I'm correcting here.
The note closes: "An old vintage everyone would like, lots of sediment. Would recommend decanting it. From the first sip you can tell why it's ranked #1 red from Spain in Korea~" His observation that it's 'complex but light for an old vintage' is interesting — even while scoring it a 4, he weighs it coolly against other aged wines he's had, noting it's lighter than some deeper old vintages he's tasted. That's 0.4 points under the Vivino community average of 4.4, but both his 4 and the overwhelming 4.4-from-900 community score point the same direction: this wine earns its reputation less on value-for-money and more on sheer polish.

“Deep red purple. 깔끔한 코르크상태, 까쇼에서 느끼는 Blackcurrant, cassis, rose, vanilla 아로마. 시라즈, 템프라뇨의 velvety smooth full body, raison, cranberry, forest fruits, pomegranate, dried red. Last flavor 로는 tobacco, pepper, soy sauce, long finish 메를롯 블랜딩이데도 방해없이 very smooth함, 15년숙성의 힘, 복합적이지만 가벼운 올빈, 좀더 깊은 맛의 올빈보단 가벼움. 누구나 좋아할 맛의 올빈 침전물 많아요. 디켄팅 해서 드심 좋을것 같아요. 처음맛에 왜 한국 스페인 레드 랭킹1위임을 알 수 있어요~”
