The line I wrote down today: even an ordinary evening can be taken out and looked at again, if someone puts a date on it.

Sunday, the bar's day off. I woke up late to white frost on my bedroom window. When I rubbed it with a fingertip, I could see outside through a circle the size of a coin. At closing yesterday, Master Seo had handed me a paper bag. "Open it at home tomorrow." That was all he said.

Around lunchtime I took the white out of the bag and poured a little into a glass. Pale straw. Green apple, lemon, a little melon. Light and tart, and quiet again almost at once. Nothing special about it. But my nose recognized it first.

One plain green apple rolled back a dinner table I thought I had completely forgotten. Once I've smelled a scent, my nose never throws it away, however ordinary it is. Late autumn when I was twenty-one, a clear, windy, cold Friday evening. The kitchen window was fogged with steam. Mom was working late at the bakery, so it was a dinner for just Father and me. There was only one bottle on the table that day. Father poured white from a cloth-wrapped bottle and didn't say a word about the wine. Instead he asked about school. I talked about a group project for a long time, and my glass stayed half full. I'd thought I remembered nothing of the smell, but one green apple brought the whole evening back. I don't know the bottle's name.

I opened the notebook. "Normal." Two stars. It's the only bottle written down for that day. The bottle was Château Beneyt Bordeaux Blanc. I hadn't known Bordeaux had such a quiet white. I stuck a wine-name Post-it into the notebook. Maybe, to Father, that day's "normal" meant an evening when his daughter's story ran longer than the wine's.

Château Beneyt is an 11-hectare family domaine on the river's right bank there, run since 1994 by fifth-generation Joël Vrignaud.
