What this wine is
William Hill Estate was founded in 1978 by Bill (William) Hill on the Silverado Bench in southeastern Napa. The Silverado Bench is a gentle stretch of rolling ground "too low to call a mountain and too high to call the valley floor", and the estate covers about 200 acres. The first wine was made in 1977 from Mount Veeder fruit; after a sale in 1992, the winery has been owned by E&J Gallo since 2007. It produces around 50,000 cases a year.
From the top, the range runs Benchland series (estate), Winemaker's series (small lots), Napa Valley series, and then the Coastal (Central Coast) series, made from grapes grown along the California coast. This Chardonnay is from that most accessible Coastal line. For the record, the Napa tasting room closed on June 30, 2024.
The producer describes it as "ripe tree fruit with subtle brown spice, balanced by citrus and tropical fruit, with bright acidity and a creamy texture." The Korean importer's description points the same way: "lemon, lime and pineapple, fresh acidity, a soft texture and a long finish."
What the world says
The Vivino community's flavor keywords are overwhelmingly in the oak family (butter 341 mentions, oak 289, vanilla 107), followed by tree fruit (pear 121, apple 69, peach 29), citrus (84), cream (75) and pineapple (26). The structure reads intensity 4.8/5, sweetness 2.8, acidity 3.1. It comes across as the archetypal 'buttery, opulent' California Chardonnay.
Vintage averages are nearly constant, 3.5–3.9 between 2009 and 2023. What decides the score here is not the vintage but whether you like this style.
"Butter, lemon and melon on the nose, golden color, a touch of sweetness. Melon, apple, vanilla, citrus; the oak on the finish is soft and well balanced. Better than expected." — Vivino review, Apr 2018, 4 stars (22 likes)
"Straw color. Oaky nose with vanilla, cedar, lemon, green apple, grapefruit and bitter almond. Medium body, M+ acidity, crisp." — Vivino review, Jun 2017, 3 stars (95 likes)
How I drank it
November 6, 2019, 5 stars. The reason I gave 5 to a wine the community scores 3.6 is clear enough. The community led with "butter and oak"; I led with fruit — "pear, apple, peach, banana, honey." We looked at the same wine along different axes, and to me in the autumn of 2019, the sheer directness of that fruit was moving.
Seven years and 733 bottles later, I can see that the 5 meant "the most satisfaction you can find at this price." On absolute terms it is a 4; on value, it is still a 5. For anyone meeting the buttery California Chardonnay style for the first time, this is a very good first bottle.

My original note (Vivino, 2019-11-06)
“Pear, apple, peach, banana, honey. As soon as you drink it in your mouth, you can feel the fruit bomb. I felt the impression and potential of this white wine. I wanna drink again and I wanna drink other wines of William Hill. I recommend it.”

Frequently asked questions
What does William Hill Chardonnay taste like?
A full-bodied California Chardonnay with butter, oak and vanilla up front and pear, apple, peach and citrus behind. At 6.2 g/L residual sugar it is not bone-dry — there is a slightly rounded touch of sweetness.
How much does it cost?
Wine-Searcher's global average is about US$13 a bottle (ex-tax). In Korea it is imported by Interwine; the Cabernet from the same line has sold at ₩27,900–35,900 (about US$20–26), so anything under ₩30,000 (about US$22) is reasonable.
What food does it go with?
Per Vivino: pork, poultry, oily fish like salmon and tuna, and vegetarian dishes. The importer recommends seafood stew and cream-sauce dishes. Given the buttery style, it is especially good with cream pasta and roast chicken.
Should I buy the 2015 vintage now?
Its suggested drinking window is 2017–2025, so it is coming to an end. Vintage variation on this wine is small (Vivino 3.5–3.9), so you are better off buying a recent vintage.
